Fabricated Ḥadīth regarding Sayyidunā Muʿāwiyah

Question

What is the authenticity of the Ḥadīth which states that Ḥaḍrat Muʿāwiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) is the Firʿawn (pharaoh) of this Ummah?

Answer

This is a clear fabrication and a blatant lie. It is beyond belief that such a question and such a thought can come into the mind of any believer. The companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, are all dear to us, we revere them all and respect them, and they are more virtuous than us. Further, some narrations suggest that Abu Jahl is the pharaoh of this Ummah, a description that is befitting to him. It seems that some opponents of Sayyidunā Muʿāwiyah (d. 60/680, may Allah be pleased with him) placed his name in lieu of Abū Jahl and thereby fabricated the narration in question.

It should be noted that there are many established virtues of Sayyidunā Muʿāwiyah, which I have detailed in my treatise entitled Iqāmat al-Burhān ʿalā Manāqib Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān, Raḍiyallāhu ʿAnh. He was a scribe for our beloved Prophet ﷺ. On one occasion, the Prophet ﷺ supplicated for him saying, “O Allah, make him a guide who is rightly guided and guide others through him.” The great Imām ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Mubārak (d. 181/797) was once asked whether Muʿāwiyah is more virtuous or ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz (d. 101/720), so he replied, “Dust in Muʿawiyah’s nostrils while in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is better – or he said superior – to ʿUmar bin ʿAbd al-ʿAziz.”

قال الشوكاني في الفوائد المجموعة (ص ٤٠٧): حديث: لكل أمة فرعون، وفرعون هذه الأمة معاوية. هو موضوع، انتهى. وقال ابن الجوزي في العلل المتناهية (١/٢٧٩): وقد روى عبد المجيد بن أبي رواد عن عبيد الله بن عمر عن نافع عن ابن عمر قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:لكل أمة فرعون وفرعون هذه الأمة معاوية بن أبي سفيان. قال مهنى: سألت أحمد ويحيى عن هذا فقال: ليس بصحيح، وعبد المجيد لم يسمع عن عبيد الله شيئا، فينبغي أن يكون قد أخذه عن إنسان فدلسه فحدث به. قال ابن الجوزي: كان الحميدي يتكلم في عبد المجيد، وقال ابن حبان: يقلب الأخبار ويروي المناكير عن المشاهير فاستحق الترك. ثم قال ابن الجوزي: وقد روي نحو حديث ابن عمر من حديث أبي ذر ولا يصح، انتهى كلام ابن الجوزي. وحديث أبي ذر سئل عنه أبو حاتم، فقال: هذا حديث باطل، يرون أن الأعمش أخذه من حكيم بن جبير عن إبراهيم عن أبيه عن أبي ذر. وحكيم هو نحو يونس بن خباب، وهو ذاهب في الضعف، كذا في علل ابن أبي حاتم (٦/٥٢٧)۔

فائدة: قال أحمد (٤٢٤٧): حدثنا معاوية بن عمرو، حدثنا أبو إسحاق، عن سفيان، عن أبي إسحاق، عن أبي عبيدة، عن ابن مسعود قال: أتيت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم بدر، فقلت: قتلت أبا جهل، قال: آلله الذي لا إله إلا هو؟، قال: قلت: آلله الذي لا إله إلا هو، فرددها ثلاثا، قال: الله أكبر، الحمد لله الذي صدق وعده، ونصر عبده، وهزم الأحزاب، وحده، انطلق فأرنيه، فانطلقنا، فإذا به، فقال: هذا فرعون هذه الأمة. ورواه النسائي في الكبرى (٥٩٦١)، وسنده ضعيف، وليس بموضوع۔
