Error of muqtadī in congregational Ṣalāh
Question
I made a mistake in Ṣalāh whilst performing behind the Imam that would normally necessitate Sajdah al-Sahw. Do I perform Sajdah al-Sahw?

Answer
In congregational Ṣalāh, a person is required to follow the Imam. Thus, if a person makes a mistake whilst performing Ṣalāh behind the Imam, there is no Sajdah al-Sahw.
However, if a person is a masbūq (missed a rakʿat) and makes an error (which necessitates Sajdah al-Sahw) after the Imam completes his Ṣalāh, Sajdah Sahw will be necessary upon him at the end of his Ṣalāh.
قال محمد في الأصل (١/١٩٩): قلت: أرأيت رجلا صلى خلف الإمام وكان يقوم قبل الإمام، أو كان يقعد قبل قعود الإمام، أو كان يسجد قبله وهو ساه في ذلك، هل عليه سجدتا السهو؟ قال: ليس على من خلف الإمام سهو إلا أن يسهو الإمام. وقال (١/٢٠١): قلت: أرأيت لو سها في صلاته بعدما قام يقضي؟ قال: يجب عليه سجدتا السهو. قلت: لم؟ قال: لأن سجوده الأول مع الإمام لا يجزيه من سهوه هذا الأخير، ولا يكون سجوده قبل هذا السهو وقبل أن يجب عليه سجوده لهذا السهو الآخر، انتهى. وراجع رد المحتار (٢/٨٢ و ٨٣)۔
