Will deceased only wish to return to the world to give charity?

Question

Is it true that a deceased will wish to return to the world to give charity due to its huge reward and that he will not wish to perform Ṣalāh or any other good deeds? A message is circulating to this effect with a verse quoted therein from Sūrah al-Munāfiqūn.

Answer

This is not true. We understand from several verses of the Quran and ḥadīths that a deceased will wish to return to the world to perform good deeds. This includes Ṣadaqah as well as other good deeds. The verse in Sūrah al-Munāfiqūn mentions Ṣadaqah in the specific context of the hypocrites encouraging people not to donate. It also mentions thereafter that the person will wish to be from the pious, which is a reference to other deeds. The verse is as follows, “And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, ‘My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be of the righteous’” (al-Munāfiqūn: 10). Thus, the verse does not in any way negate the deceased wishing to perform other good deeds. Even if this verse only mentioned Ṣadaqah, this would not negate the deceased wishing to perform other deeds as understood from other verses and Ḥadīths.
