Intention to repay debt and Allah’s assistance

Question

Is there a ḥadīth which states that a person who has intention to repay his debt is supported by Allah Almighty to repay it?

Answer

There are several ḥadīths that affirm this. For example, it is narrated that the mother of believers ʿĀʾishah (d. 58/678, may Allah be pleased with her) would take loans and when asked regarding this, she said, ‘I heard the messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “There is no servant who has intention to repay his debt except that he has support from Allah, The Almighty and Exalted”, so I am seeking that support’.

It is widely experienced that individuals and organisations who have intention to repay loans are supported by Allah Almighty, enabling them to repay the loans easily and quickly. On the other hand, individuals and organisations that do not have the intention to repay loans are deprived from Allah’s blessings and continue to struggle.

عن أبي هريرة رفعه: من أخذ أموال الناس يريد أداءها أدى الله عنه، ومن أخذ يريد إتلافها أتلفه الله، رواه البخاري (٢٣٨٧)۔

وعن عائشة أنها كانت تدان، فقيل لها: ما لك وللدين؟ قالت: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: ما من عبد كانت له نية في أداء دينه، إلا كان له من الله عز وجل عون، فأنا ألتمس ذلك العون، رواه أحمد (٢٤٤٣٩ و ٢٤٦٧٩ و ٢٤٩٩٣ و ٢٥٩٧٧ و ٢٦١٢٧) وأبو داود الطيالسي (١٦٢٨) وصححه الحاكم (٢٢٠٢)، وأقل أحواله أنه حسن بمجموع طرقه وشاهده من حديث ميمونة۔

وعن عائشة مرفوعا: من كان عليه دين همه قضاؤه – أو هم بقضائه – لم يزل معه من الله حارس، رواه أحمد (٢٦١٨٧) والطبراني في الأوسط (٣٧٥٩)۔

وعن ميمونة أنها استدانت فقيل لها: يا أم المؤمنين، تستدينين وليس عندك وفاء، قالت: إني سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: من أخذ دينا وهو يريد أن يؤديه أعانه الله عز وجل، رواه النسائي (٤٦٨٧) وابن ماجه (٢٤٠٨) وصححه ابن حبان (٥٠٤١)۔
