Was Shaykh Mahmud Effendi the Mujaddid of this century?

Was Shaykh Mahmud Effendi the Mujaddid of this century?

Was Shaykh Maḥmūd Effendī the Mujaddid of this century?

Question

I am writing to kindly seek clarification on a matter related to the conference held in Istanbul in 2010, during which the esteemed Shaykh Maḥmūd Effendī was honoured with the “Service to Islam Award.” As you know, some prominent Deobandi scholars such as Shaykh Arshad Madanī, Shaykh Sālim Qāsimī, Shaykh Rafīʿ ʿUthmānī and your respected father Shaykh Shabbīr Aḥmad attended this meeting. Following that event, certain individuals within the circle surrounding Shaykh Maḥmūd Effendī began propagating the idea that he was declared the mujaddid (renewer) of the century by the unanimous agreement of the scholars who attended the conference. The reason I am bringing up this matter again after such a long time is that some individuals have reached the point of accusing even those who do not believe, or who remain doubtful, that Shaykh Maḥmūd Effendī was the mujaddid. I would be most grateful if you could share your perspective on this issue.

Answer

Shaykh Maḥmūd Effendī (d. 1443/2022) was a pious saint and a revered scholar who had a profound impact on the lives of tens of thousands of people particularly in Turkey. He played a leading role in the revival of Islam and the Sunnah during a very challenging time in the country. His contribution and lifelong services are well established. Therefore, the view that he was from among the Mujaddids (revivers) of this century is a valid view. However, it should be noted that according to the preferred view, the Ḥadīth in relation to revival at the turn of each century does not necessarily refer to only one person, it refers to more than one person. This is obvious when considering that the impact of the famous revivers of the past few centuries was restricted to a particular geographical region or a particular community. Most Muslims of the Indian sub-continent are unaware of Shaykh Maḥmūd Effendī, and likewise most Turkish Muslims are unaware of the revivers of faith within the Indian subcontinent.

The other point to note is that the Ḥadīths do not specify the names of the revivers. Therefore, no one can say with 100% certainty that a particular Shaykh is the Mujaddid being referred to in the Ḥadīth. Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (d. 241/855) said, “So it was ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz at the turn of the first century, and I hope that it was (Imām) Shāfiʿī at the turn of the second century.” Imām Aḥmad was careful in his wording and used the word “hope” without expressing certainty. Therefore, if someone does not regard Shaykh Maḥmūd as a Mujaddid then there is no need to insist and make this an issue of contention. In the absence of certainty, people are entitled to an alternative view. One should not however deny the huge impact and contribution of Shaykh Maḥmūd as that would be a gross injustice. May Allah Almighty accept his services and grant him an abode in Jannat al-Firdaws. Āmīn.
