Question

What is the source of the following statement أأترك سنة حبيبي لهؤلاء الحمقى?

Answer

We have been unable to locate this statement. Some books attribute this statement to the companion, Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (d. 36/656, may Allah be pleased with him), who is suggested to have said this statement in the palace of the Persian superpower during negotiations, when a person sat next to him during the meal objected at him picking up a morsel and cleaning it with the intention of eating it (Iṣlāḥī Khuṭubāt, 2: 165-6). We have been unable to locate this narration.

A similar story is narrated in Sunan Ibn Mājah with the companion Maʿqil ibn Yasār (d.a.60/680, may Allah be pleased with him). However, the wording is different: “I am not going to abandon something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for these non- Arabs. We were instructed, if one of us dropped a morsel of food, to pick it up, remove whatever dirt is on it, and eat it, and not to leave it for Satan.”

قال ابن ماجه في السنن (٣٢٧٨): حدثنا سويد بن سعيد قال: حدثنا يزيد بن زريع، عن يونس، عن الحسن، عن معقل بن يسار قال: بينما هو يتغدى، إذ سقطت منه لقمة، فتناولها، فأماط، ما كان فيها من أذى، فأكلها، فتغامز به الدهاقين، فقيل: أصلح الله الأمير، إن هؤلاء الدهاقين يتغامزون من أخذك اللقمة وبين يديك هذا الطعام، قال: إني لم أكن لأدع ما سمعت من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لهذه الأعاجم، إنا كنا يؤمر أحدنا إذا سقطت لقمته أن يأخذها فيميط ما كان فيها من أذى ويأكلها ولا يدعها للشيطان، انتهى. قال البوصيري في مصباح الزجاجة في زوائد ابن ماجه (٤/١٢): هذا إسناد رجاله ثقات غير أنه منقطع، قال أبو حاتم: الحسن لم يسمع من معقل بن يسار، انتهى. رواه مسدد في مسنده عن يزيد بن زريع بإسناده ومتنه، وله شاهد في صحيح مسلم وغيره من حديث جابر بن عبد الله وأنس بن مالك، انتهى. وفيه سويد بن سعيد، قال في التقريب (ص ٢٦٠): صدوق في نفسه إلا أنه عمي فصار يتلقن ما ليس من حديثه فأفحش فيه ابن معين، انتهى. ولكن رواه الدارمي (٢٠٧٢) عن زكريا بن عدي عن يزيد بن زريع، وزكريا ثقة. ورواية مسدد عن يزيد بن زريع رواها الطبراني في الكبير (٢٠/٢٠٠) عن معاذ بن المثنى والفضل بن الحباب الجمحي عن مسدد۔
