Do Nikāḥ witnesses have to be from the family?
Question
For Nikāḥ, do the witnesses need to be from the bride’s family or groom’s family? Also do the witnesses need to be Maḥram?

Answer
There is no requirement for the witnesses to be from the bride’s family or groom’s family or to be a Maḥram. The witnesses must be must be sane Muslim adults (bālig), two males or one male and two females.
قال محمد في الأصل (١٠/٢٠٩): بلغنا عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال: لا نكاح إلا بشهود. وإذا تزوج الرجل بشهادة شاهدين فهو جائز. وقال (١٠/٢١١): ولا بأس بأن يتزوجها بشهادة رجل وامرأتين، انتهى. وقال القدوري في مختصره (ص ١٤٥): ولا يعقد نكاح المسلمين إلا بحضور شاهدين حرين بالغين عاقلين مسلمين أو رجل وامرأتين، انتهى۔
