Child leading Tarāwīḥ Ṣalāh at home
Question
I am a Ḥifẓ teacher of many children who have not yet reached bulūgh but are desiring to lead Tarāwīḥ Ṣalāh with their families in their own homes as it will be good practice and help them with their Hifz revision. Can they lead Tarāwīḥ Ṣalāh in their own homes with their families?

Answer
A non-bālig child can lead other non-bālig children in Tarāwīḥ Ṣalāh. However, there is a difference of opinion among ḥanafī jurists regarding adults performing Tarāwīḥ Ṣalāh behind such a child. The preferred view is that it not valid and should therefore be avoided under normal circumstances. However, if the ḥāfiẓ child has the knowledge and understanding of purity and Ṣalāh, there is scope according to some scholars to follow the alternative view and permit adults performing Ṣalāh behind such an Imam. In such a scenario, an adult must lead ʿIshāʾ and Witr Ṣalāh. This view can be followed in the scenario in question but should be avoided in Masjids. قال اللكنوي في نفع المفتي والسائل المطبوع في رسائله (٤/١٢٢): قد كنت حفظت القرآن لما بلغت إحدى عشر سنة، فجعلني والدي عم فيضه إماما في التراويح، وهكذا سمعت أبا عن جد أن العلماء المتأخرين كانوا يفعلونه من غير منكر ونكير، والله أعلم، انتهى كلام اللكنوي. وقال ابن جرير الطبري: حفظت القرآن ولي سبع سنين، وصليت بالناس وأنا ابن ثماني سنين، وكتبت الحديث وأنا ابن تسع سنين، نقله ياقوت الحموي في معجم الأدباء (٦/٢٤٤٦) وعلق عليه الشيخ عبد الفتاح أبو غدة في العلماء العزاب الذين آثروا العلم على الزواج (ص ٥٨): كانوا يفعلون هذا في صلاة التراويح في رمضان، لأنها من النوافل، فيجوز فيها اقتداء المكلف بغير المكلف، باعتبار أن الجميع يصلون نافلة، ويكون في اقتداء الكبار بالصغير تشجيع له وتفريح، وتكريم لحفظ القرآن في نفوس الناس وفي نفوس الناشئة الصغار. وما يزال هذا معروفا في بعض البلدان الإسلامية والحمد لله. أسأله تعالى أن يعود هذا الاهتمام المبارك والاقتداء الميمون إلى مساجد المسلمين، فتفرح به قلوب المؤمنين وتقر بمنظره عيونُهم، انتهى۔
