Jazakallahu Khayra or Thank You

Jazakallahu Khayra or Thank You

Jazākallāhu Khayrā or Thank You

Question

When someone does a favour upon you, what is the preferred way of thanking them? Is it better to say Jazākallāh or Jazākallāhu Khayrā? Can an English phrase be used such as: May Allah reward you or Thank you?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

Answer

The Prophet ﷺ explains in a ḥadīth that if a person does a favour upon you, you should recompensate him, and if unable to do so, you should supplicate for him until you feel that you have compensated him. Thus, the minimum is that one supplicates for the person. The supplication can be made in English or Arabic with any suitable phrase. It is, however, preferred to use the words Jazākallāhu Khayrā (may Allah reward you with good), as another ḥadīth explains that a person who uses this phrase has fully expressed his praise and appreciation. The English translation can also be used.

In relation to using the phrase ‘Thank You’, this is permissible.
