Ḥadīth: Seek knowledge even as far as China
Question
Is the Ḥadīth “Seek knowledge even as far as China” authentic?

Answer
The narration is not authentic, as detailed by our respected teacher Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Mawlānā Muḥammad Yūnus Jownpūrī (d. 1438/2017). Seeking knowledge is a very noble endeavour and travelling to different parts of the world to acquire knowledge has been the practice of scholars throughout the centuries, and there are many authentic virtues in this regard.
قال البزار (١/١٦٤): وحديث أبي العاتكة: اطلبوا العلم ولو بالصين، لا يعرف أبو العاتكة ولا يدرى من أين هو، فليس لهذا الحديث أصل، انتهى. وقال ابن حبان في المجروحين (١٠/٤٨٩، طبعة دار الصميعي): باطل لا أصل له، انتهى. ووافقه السخاوي في المقاصد الحسنة (ص ١٢١). وراجع اليواقيت الغالية (٢/١٨٤ و ٤٢٦ – ٤٣٥) لشيخنا محمد يونس الجونفوري فأفاد وأجاد ونبه على وهم المناوي وغيره، ولم أر فيه قول البزار المذكور فذكرته۔
