Changing Iḥrām of Ifrād to Qirān
Question
We have passed Dhū al-Ḥulayfah an hour ago (on the 7th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah) and I made intention of Ifrād, because we were told we were leaving for Mina tonight, thus leaving no time for ʿUmrah. However, Motawif have just emailed us that we will be going to Mina tomorrow morning. Can I change my intention to Qirān as I know I have sufficient time and will it be valid?

Answer
If a person has entered into Iḥrām with the intention of Ifrād, and thereafter changes his intention to Qirān and does ʿUmrah and Ḥajj, both will be valid. It is, however, makrūh (disliked) to change the intention to Qirān. It is therefore advised to proceed with the Ifrād Hajj. May Allah accept your Hajj.
Note: It is not possible to change the intention from Ifrād to Tamattuʿ. This is because the Ḥajj Iḥrām cannot be converted to ʿUmrah. In the Qirān scenario above, ʿUmrah is added to the Ḥajj Iḥrām, which although makrūh is valid.
قال الحاكم الشهيد في الكافي المطبوع في الأصل (٢/٥٣١): والعمرة لا تضاف إلى الحجة. قال: فمن أهل بالحج أولا ثم أضاف إليها عمرة فقد أساء ولزمته وهو قارن، انتهى. قال السرخسي في المبسوط (٤/١٨٠): ومن أضاف العمرة إلى الحج كان فعله مخالفا لما في القرآن فكان مسيئا من هذا الوجه، ولكن مع هذا هو قارن فإن القارن هو جامع بين العمرة والحج، انتهى. وفي لباب المناسك (ص ٤١٥): والثاني: إضافة العمرة إلى الحج، وهو أن يحرم بالحج أولا ثم بالعمرة قبل أن يطوف طواف القدوم أو بعده. قال: والثاني مكروه لهما، انتهى۔
فائدة: أما تغيير النية إلى التمتع فلا يصح. قال في لباب المناسك (ص ٤٢٠): لا يجوز ولا يصح فسخ إحرام الحج إلى العمرة عند الثلاثة خلافا لأحمد، انتهى۔
