Bovaer in Cow’s Milk

Question

There has been controversy in the UK recently regarding cow’s milk that has been fed the additive Bovaer (the brand name for the additive 3-Nitrooxypropanol -3-NOP), which reduces methane emissions from cows. Is it permissible to continue drinking the milk or is it best to avoid? The Food Standards Agency says that it is safe to drink and that the additive is metabolised by the cows so does not pass into the milk.

Answer

It is permissible to continue to consume such milk. Independent medical experts should be consulted on whether it is better to avoid from a medical perspective.
