Ghusl for women and using the waterproof cap
Question
I recently saw a video which mentioned that it is permissible for a woman after intimacy to make a pony tail or a bun and cover it with a waterproof cap to avoid wetting it during Farḍ ghusl. Is this correct? My understanding is that if there were braids or plaits already in the hair then there is permission to wet the roots only. Please clarify.

Answer
If a woman has plaits or braids in her hair, it is not necessary to undo them as long as the water reaches the root and base of each hair. In this scenario, the cap can be used to cover the plaited hair.
However, if there are no plaits or braids already in the hair, then the water must reach all the hair. It is therefore not correct to make a pony tail or bun and use the waterproof cap.
عن أم سلمة قالت: قلت يا رسول الله، إني امرأة أشد ضفر رأسي فأنقضه لغسل الجنابة؟ قال: لا إنما يكفيك أن تحثي على رأسك ثلاث حثيات ثم تفيضين عليك الماء فتطهرين، رواه مسلم (٣٣٠). قال محمد في الأصل (١/٢٤): قلت: أرأيت إن اغتسلت المرأة ولم تنقض شعر رأسها إلا أن الماء يبلغ الشعر، قال: يجزيها، انتهى. وفي الهندية (١/١٣): وليس على المرأة أن تنقض ضفائرها في الغسل إذا بلغ الماء أصول الشعر، وليس عليها بل ذوائبها، هو الصحيح، كذا في الهداية. ولو كان شعر المرأة منقوضا يجب إيصال الماء إلى أثنائه، ويجب على الرجل إيصال الماء إلى أثناء اللحية كما يجب إلى أصولها وإلى أثناء شعره وإن كان ضفيرا، كذا في محيط السرخسي، انتهى. وقال الحصكفي في الدر المختار (١/١٥٣): (وكفى بل أصل ضفيرتها) أي شعر المرأة المضفور للحرج، أما المنقوض فيفرض غسل كله اتفاقا، ولو لم يبتل أصلها يجب نقضها مطلقا، هو الصحيح، انتهى۔
