Nizam al-Mulk keeping Madrasah Nizamiyyah open due to Imam Ghazali
Question
Mawlānā Ashraf ʿAlī Thānawī has narrated an incident of Nizam al-Mulk, who visited Madrasah Nizamiyyah in Baghdad and found that most students were learning for worldly motives. He decided to shut down the institute. He finally met one student who was studying in a corner. He explained that he had come to realise from naqlī and ʿaqlī proofs that Allah Taʿālā is his Creator, and he now needed to find out how to please his Creator and what to do to save himself from His displeasure. He therefore kept the institute running due to this one student. This student was Imam Ghazālī. (See Tuḥfat al-ʿUlamā)
(a) Is this incident historically correct? (b) Is such an incident mentioned in any biography of Imam Ghazālī?

Ḥakīm al-Ummah Mawlānā Ashraf ʿAlī Thānawī (d. 1362/1943) has mentioned this story, as mentioned in Tuḥfat al-ʿUlamā (p.199). We have not come across this specific story in the few biographies we have consulted. However, Imam Ghazālī taught at Madrasah Nizamiyyah in Baghdad at the instruction of Nizam al-Mulk and therefore it is possible that the story is historically correct. قال ابن عساكر في تاريخ دمشق (٥٥/٢٠٠): وولي التدريس بالمدرسة النظامية ببغداد، انتهى. وقال التاج السبكي في طبقاته (٦/١٩٧): قدم بغداد في سنة أربع وثمانين وأربعمائة ودرس بالنظامية، انتهى. وقال ابن الجوزي في المنتظم في حوادث سنة ٤٨٨: وفي ذي القعدة: خرج أبو حامد الغزالي من بغداد متوجها إلى بيت المقدس تاركا للتدريس في النظامية، زاهدا في ذلك، لابسا خشن الثياب بعد ناعمها، وناب عنه أخوه في التدريس، وعاد في السنة الثالثة من خروجه وقد صنف كتاب الإحياء، فكان يجتمع إليه الخلق الكثير كل يوم في الرباط فيسمعونه منه، ثم حج في سنة تسعين، ثم عاد إلى بلده، انتهى. وقال الذهبي في السير (١٩/٣٢٣): تفقه ببلده أولا، ثم تحول إلى نيسابور في مرافقة جماعة من الطلبة، فلازم إمام الحرمين، فبرع في الفقه في مدة قريبة، ومهر في الكلام والجدل، حتى صار عين المناظرين، وأعاد للطلبة، وشرع في التصنيف، فما أعجب ذلك شيخه أبا المعالي، ولكنه مظهر للتبجح به، ثم سار أبو حامد إلى المخيم السلطاني، فأقبل عليه نظام الملك الوزير، وسر بوجوده، وناظر الكبار بحضرته، فانبهر له، وشاع أمره، فولاه النظام تدريس نظامية بغداد، انتهى۔
