Miswak and Toothbrush
Will the Sunnah of miswak be fulfilled by using a toothbrush?
بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم
According to our teacher Muḥaddith al-ʿAṣr Shaykh al-Ḥadīth Mawlānā Muḥammad Yūnus Jownpūrī (d. 1438/2017) who has passed away today, there are two Sunnah elements to the use of the miswak; one is the cleansing aspect and the second is the the specific device used by the Prophet ﷺ. Accordingly, using a toothbrush will achieve the former and not the latter. Thus, the toothbrush should not be regarded as a complete substitute of the miswak. A similar differentiation has also been made by Shaykh al-Islam Mufti Muḥammad Taqī ʿUthmānī (b. 1362/1943) (Dars Tirmidhī, 1:226). It is also worth noting that there are also additional benefits of the miswak. Thus, using the miswak will result in greater reward and benefit.
